Styroboard XPS has become the material of choice for home builders, specifiers, architects and engineers due to its high compressive strength and excellent thermal performance. Truly a green building product, Foamex XPS products contain up to 100% recycled polystyrene, which is diverted from landfill.

XPS foam meets many key structural and civil engineering requirements because it is dimensionally stable, organically inert and practically impervious to water. With superior compressive strength and higher long-term R-Values, it is suitable for use on floors subjected to engineered loads and constant traffic, as well as insulation for inverted roofs, rooftop gardens, parking decks and commercial purlin roof spacers.

fire

Extruded polystyrene foam fire properties

All Foamex XPS foam products are manufactured from a fire-retardant raw material and do not present as a fire hazard when correctly installed. Like other organic materials, polystyrene will burn when in contact with a flame, but it will self-extinguish when the fire source is removed.

Green building XPS foam product

Produced with no refrigerants and free from HCFCs, Styroboard XPS is a truly green building product. With XPS foam insulation you can limit external temperature influences, reduce internal temperature fluctuations, and in turn, reduce the need for mass air-conditioning and electricity consumption. Maintaining thermal consistency means less energy is consumed, which leads to fewer greenhouse emissions.

Quality and integrity

Foamex is the only Australian manufacturer and supplier of domestically produced extruded polystyrene, demonstrating its commitment to the local market. Embodying the principles of a true circular economy, Styroboard XPS is made from up to 100% premium-grade, recycled expanded polystyrene (EPS). By harnessing this environmentally responsible material, projects gain a distinct advantage in terms of integrity, safety, and durability while significantly contributing to sustainability efforts and the preservation of natural resources.

Local manufacturing for local conditions

Foamex manufactures its products to suit the Australian climate. Imported extruded polystyrene does not always provide any guarantees about the grade of material used in the manufacturing process. Over time, extruded polystyrene that has been manufactured using low-quality input material has the tendency to rapidly leach out harmful blowing agents, which impacts the environment and affects functionally due to reduced R-Values.

 Eco-friendly XPS insulation

Foamex XPS board is entirely free from Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), a flame retardant that was commonly used in polystyrene insulation materials. This omission of HBCD is highly beneficial as it promotes a safer and more eco-friendly solution for insulation needs, ensuring reduced potential for harmful chemical exposure and contributing to the overall improvement of environmental sustainability.

 FAQs about StyroBoard XPS

What is Extruded Polystyrene (XPS)?

Extruded polystyrene (XPS) is rigid foam providing a strong, lightweight and flexible insulation solution that is resistant to water absorption, making it ideal for a range of building and commercial applications.

What is the difference between XPS and EPS?

Extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam is a rigid insulation that is formed with a polystyrene polymer and manufactured using an extrusion process. This rigid foam provides a strong, lightweight and flexible insulation solution that is resistant to water absorption. XPS foam board is ideal for a range of commercial uses – from wall and ceiling insulation, cool rooms & refrigeration, under concrete slabs, and even for architectural modelling or hobby model making.

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam is a closed-cell insulation that’s manufactured by ‘expanding’ the polystyrene polymer. Produced in block form, it is converted for use across many applications including wall insulation and architectural profiles, void forms, protective packaging, cold storage, refrigeration units and sign-writing displays.

What is the lifespan of XPS foam?

Rigid foam boards such as StyroBoard XPS provide energy efficiency and constant insulation over the lifetime of the building, providing long-term benefits.
