Why buy polystyrene foam blocks from Foamex?

Established in 1982, Foamex is one of Australia’s largest manufacturers and recyclers of polystyrene products and a recognised leader in the development of new and innovative uses of expanded and extruded polystyrene.

  • All Foamex expanded polystyrene (EPS) products, including StyroBloc, are manufactured locally to stringent Australian standards with independent research, testing, and industry consultation.
  • All products are manufactured from the highest-quality expanded polystyrene, which is strength-tested against a range of stringent criteria.
  • Manufacturing technology used to produce Styroboard EPS expanded polystyrene products removes the need for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), meaning the products do not produce ozone-depleting gases.
  • Foamex has a closed-loop production model, which means that whatever leaves the factory that is either unused or has reached its end of life can be returned and manufactured into other products, such as StyroBloc, which contains up to 75% recycled polystyrene.
  • Foamex collects and recycles scrap polystyrene from building sites, commercial recycling and recycling bins accessed by the general public.

FAQs about polystyrene blocks

Why do builders use polystyrene blocks?

Polystyrene blocks are lightweight and easy to handle without using heavy lifting equipment. This also makes them great for difficult terrain and cost-effective transport and installation compared to traditional fill products. They make excellent void filler, saving on using concrete, which is more expensive than polystyrene to transport and install. Expanded polystyrene foam blocks (EPS) are also favoured in construction due to their excellent thermal insulation properties, which help reduce energy costs. EPS is 100% recyclable and moisture resistant, preventing mould and structural damage. It maintains its integrity over time, ensuring durability and longevity, and its versatility allows for varied applications, such as geofoam blocks.

How to cut polystyrene blocks

A variety of tools can be used to cut polystyrene blocks, including hand saws, hot wire cutters, long-blade utility knives, and jigsaws. A hot wire cutter is the quickest and neatest method, but it is important to take safety precautions when cutting EPS blocks with a hot wire or knife.
