Keep in touch with the latest news from Foamex regarding our products and the latest happenings in the polystyrene manufacturing industry in Australia.

With today’s intense focus on the environmental building goals of sustainability and energy efficiency, the proper use of building insulation is more important than ever.

One of the many uses of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) is for highly effective commercial and residential insulation: roof insulation, underfloor insulation, ceiling insulation and wall insulation.

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam is a closed-cell insulation that’s manufactured by “expanding” the polystyrene polymer.
Expanded polystyrene is produced in block form which is then converted into a number of applications. Expanded polystyrene can be used in wall insulation and architectural profiles, void forms, protective packaging, cold storage, refrigeration units and sign writing displays.

Extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam is a rigid insulation that’s also formed with polystyrene polymer, but manufactured using an extrusion process. This rigid foam provides a strong, yet lightweight and flexible insulation solution which is resistant to water absorption. Extruded Polystyrene Board is ideal for a range of uses – from wall and ceiling insulation, cool rooms & refrigeration, under concrete slab (i.e. car park), and even for architectural modelling or hobby model making.

Both EPS and XPS providing efficient and effective insulation with the following added benefits:

EPS:

  • Fully recyclable
  • Won’t support mould or mildew growth
  • Long-term, stable R-value
  • Moisture resistant

XPS:

  • Higher compressive strength, R-value and moisture resistance
  • Superior thermal performance
  • Can be placed below ground level for waterproofing as well as in roof systems where insulation is placed over the roof membrane

The use of EPS and XPS insulation in commercial and residential buildings offers great flexibility, compatibility, and thermal efficiency for use at all areas of a building envelope. Picking between the two will depend on particular use; choosing the appropriate type is critical for proper insulation performance.
