“EPS panels” is not one product. The term covers rendered facade and EIFS panels, structural insulated panels, sandwich panels and cool room panels. What they share is an expanded polystyrene core. Foamex does not make the finished panels. Foamex manufactures the EPS core inside them, and supplies panel and EIFS manufacturers across Australia with certified, cut-to-profile expanded polystyrene made to AS 1366.3. If you build panels, this is about where the core comes from and why it matters.
Specifiers and builders use “EPS panels” loosely, so the first job is to separate the products it refers to. The second is the part that decides how the finished panel performs: the EPS core itself.
What “EPS panels” actually means
EPS panels are building products that use a rigid expanded polystyrene board as the insulating core. The core is the constant. The facing, the finish and the structural role change from product to product, and so does the manufacturer who makes them. The EPS is graded to AS 1366.3, and its grade, density and thickness set the thermal and mechanical performance the finished panel can claim.
The main types of EPS panel
- Rendered facade and EIFS panels. An EPS board fixed to the wall, reinforced with a base coat and mesh, and finished with a render. Used for lightweight, insulated facades.
- Structural insulated panels (SIPs). An EPS core bonded between two structural facings such as OSB, plywood or magnesium board, used as load-bearing wall and roof elements.
- Sandwich and composite panels. An EPS core between steel or aluminium skins, used for walls, roofing and cold storage.
- Cool room and cold storage panels. EPS-cored panels for temperature-controlled rooms, where continuous insulation and consistent core density matter to the thermal result.
Each is a different finished product from a different manufacturer. The one thing they have in common is the board in the middle.

What every EPS panel depends on: the core
The finished panel is only as good as the EPS it was built and tested with. Grade (SL, S, M or H per AS 1366.3) sets the mechanical and impact performance. Density and thickness set the insulation value, specified to AS/NZS 4859.1. When a manufacturer certifies or tests a panel, that evidence assumes a specific core. A variable or wrongly graded board puts both the thermal claim and the compliance evidence at risk, which is why manufacturers care as much about core consistency as about price.
Fire and compliance in short
EPS is combustible. A compliant panel carries its fire performance as a complete, tested assembly, not from the core alone. For external walls, full-scale testing to AS 5113 is the common evidence pathway, and the wall must meet the NCC provisions for the building’s class, height and construction type. Cold storage and structural panels have their own applicable requirements. The core is supplied to grade; the finished, fire-tested panel is the panel manufacturer’s.
Where the EPS core comes from: Foamex
Most panel and EIFS brands do not mould their own polystyrene. They build a tested product around an EPS core bought from a manufacturer, so the core has to be consistent, correctly graded and dimensionally accurate. Foamex makes that core. For panel and EIFS manufacturers, Foamex supplies:
- EPS to grade, certified to AS 1366.3, with batch-to-batch consistency a panel’s test evidence can rely on.
- Cut-to-profile and custom shapes through hot-wire cutting: to the sizes, profiles and tolerances a panel design needs.
- Consistent density and dimensional accuracy, so the board delivered matches the board that was tested.
- Australian manufacture since 1982 across five states, which means supply reliability, lead time and the volume to support production runs.
- Recycled content where feedstock allows, plus clean-offcut recovery through the Foamex collection system.
- Product documentation and technical support for the manufacturer’s own compliance file.
For panel and EIFS manufacturers
If you manufacture insulated, structural, sandwich, cool room or render panels and want a local EPS core partner, Foamex supplies expanded polystyrene to your grade, size and profile, made in Australia and certified to AS 1366.3, with the batch consistency your product’s test evidence depends on. Sustainability
Styroboard EPS sheets and blocks can contain recycled content. Clean EPS offcuts from cutting and manufacture are 100 per cent recyclable through the Foamex collection and reprocessing system, and Foamex collects EPS production waste from its products. Foamex is a member of Expanded Polystyrene Australia (EPSA) and manufactures EPS in Australia without CFCs or HCFCs.
Frequently asked questions
What are EPS panels?
Building panels that use a rigid expanded polystyrene board as the insulating core. The term covers rendered facade and EIFS panels, structural insulated panels (SIPs), sandwich or composite panels, and cool room panels.
Does Foamex make EPS panels?
No. Foamex manufactures the EPS core that panel and EIFS makers build their products around. Foamex supplies the expanded polystyrene to grade, size and profile, certified to AS 1366.3; the finished panel is the panel manufacturer’s.
What grade of EPS is used in panels?
It depends on the panel. Grade (SL, S, M or H per AS 1366.3) is chosen for the panel’s mechanical, impact and thermal requirements, and is set by the panel manufacturer’s specification.
Can Foamex supply custom EPS core sizes and profiles?
Yes. Foamex hot-wire cuts EPS to custom sizes, profiles and tolerances, to the grade a panel requires, manufactured in Australia.
Are EPS panels fire-compliant?
A compliant panel earns its fire performance as a complete tested assembly, commonly through AS 5113 testing for external walls, and must meet the NCC provisions for the building. EPS is combustible and is not fire-rated in isolation.
