Easily carved into whatever shape you can imagine Styroboard EPS expanded polystyrene can be made to look like any other type of material – metal, wood, stone, and more. For example, EPS was used throughout many of the sets on The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded polystyrene was carved using hot wire design methods.
Styroboard XPS extruded polystyrene can also be used to craft theatre sets and props, especially for scenes that involve water or heavy loads. Practically impervious to moisture and providing highly compressive strength, extruded polystyrene is more durable and cost effective than any fibreglass alternative.
Model Making
Model making enthusiasts have been using polystyrene for many years to bring their projects to life due to its lightweight nature, versatility and cost-effectiveness. Like theatre and movie props, Styroboard EPS expanded polystyrene is easy to work with making it ideal for moulding and shaping scenery and landscapes in miniature.
Styroboard XPS extruded polystyrene has more recently been embraced by model makers for water borne projects such as model boats and even surfboards. Extruded Polystyrene is a closed cell board with high rigidity that maintains its structural integrity when carved and is also practically impervious to water. Once shaped, the designs can be custom painted or finished in a variety of ways.
