Insulate Your Home against Rising Power Costs

Insulate Your Home against Rising Power Costs

Insulation can save your family thousands of dollars, and now even more so with the introduction of little known changes to electricity laws.

Families are facing increases of up to $700 for running their air conditioner, or hikes of up to 15,000%, under changes to electricity laws that have been announced to commence in 2017. The changes to the cost of running an air conditioner have been made in an effort to encourage families to monitor their electricity usage, otherwise they may end up paying more to keep their family comfortable on hot days.

EPS has much better thermal properties than traditional brick veneer

EPS has much better thermal properties than traditional brick veneer

When it comes to choosing between expanded polystyrene and traditional brick veneer, it’s clear-cut that expanded polystyrene has the superior thermal properties to keep your house cool in summer and warm in winter.

Insulation is an important feature of your house. A well-insulated home will keep your house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, reducing your heating and cooling bills and contributing to a more comfortable home for you and your family. However, with all the insulation options out there, what product is the superior choice to keep your home comfortable and energy-efficient?Between expanded polystyrene and brick veneer, there’s no doubt that expanded polystyrene has the superior thermal properties for your home. This is quantified through the “R-value” of the two materials, or thermal resistance, which is an approximate measurement of how much the material impedes the transfer of heat.According to the Australian Government’s Your Home website, traditional brick veneer walls offer a R-value of 0.45 which does not meet the recommended levels of thermal resistance according to Choice. Depending on your choice of thickness for expanded polystyrene, this translates to being only between 18% and 45% as effective as expanded polystyrene which has an R-value of up to 2.78!When it comes to insulating your home, expanded polystyrene trumps the thermal resistance of traditional brick veneer, and can offer your family a more comfortable and energy-efficient home. At Foamex, we offer wide a variety of expanded polystyrene products to suit your varying insulation needs, both for commercial and residential applications. Poor insulation contributes to excess use of energy

Poor insulation contributes to excess use of energy

It’s summer time, and the air conditioners and fans are running to keep the house cool. However, you may be using more energy than you need to during the summer months if your home is poorly insulated.

According to the Australian Department of Industry and Science, insulation can save you up to 40% in heating and cooling bills by keeping the heat out in the summer and warmth in for the winter. In an uninsulated or poorly insulated home, the energy that you use to heat or cool your home can leak out, meaning that you have to have your cooling or heating solutions running constantly to keep your house comfortable. With proper insulation, you’ll be able to cool or heat your home to your desired temperature, and have your insulation keep that temperature consistent by preventing the energy from leaking out. This means that you’ll save on your energy bills as you’ll be less reliant on your energy or cooling solutions as the insulation will keep the hot or cool air in for longer! With Foamex’s Expol underfloor insulation you can reduce the amount of heat that gets into your home in summer, and in turn help to reduce those energy bills. Safe, easy to install, and perfect for retro-fitting to existing homes Expol underfloor insulation can add a level of thermal resistance to your home, meaning that you’ll be able to keep the cool in and the cooling solutions off for longer, saving you from feeling the heat when it comes to paying the bills. For a more comfortable home during the hot and cold months without the sting of high energy bills, contact Foamex today and enquire about Expol underfloor insulation.

How is Expanded Polystyrene manufactured?

styroboardEPS

Foamex STYROBOARD EPS expanded polystyrene is a rigid cellular plastic foam material derived from petroleum and natural gas by-products.Styrene is produced from benzene and ethylene, and is polymerised in the presence of catalysts, usually organic peroxides. To create the expanded polystyrene blocks and sheets that you are familiar with, steam is applied to tiny grains or beads of styrene that contain a minute amount of pentane. This steam process causes the thermoplastic polystyrene to soften and expand up to 40 times its original volume. Again using steam in the process, the expanded beads are then moulded into a shape or large blocks which are then sliced into boards. The EPS product is then dried and finished by a number of processes, such as hot wire cutting or lamination.Unlike the manufacturing process for many other synthetic materials, the EPS manufacturing process also does not involved the use of ozone-layer-depleting CFCs and HCFCs, nor are there harmful materials present in the finished product. The small amount of pentane gas used in the process has no known effect on the upper ozone layer. The manufacturing process for EPS is an excellent example of an efficient use of a natural resource as the transformation process uses relatively little energy during manufacture.

Australian made Foamex Styroboard XPS - Tough and durable

logoxps

Styroboard XPS is an Australian made and owned product; produced on extruding machines in Foamex’s state of the art facility in Victoria.Due to its high compressive strength and superior thermal performance, Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) has long been the material of choice across residential, commercial and industrial sectors.Extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam is rigid foam providing a strong, yet lightweight and flexible insulation solution which is resistant to water absorption. When many traditional insulation materials come into contact with water they loses their thermal abilities, but even when facing extreme weather conditions, Styroboard XPS preserves its thermal and physical properties making it a perfect robust building material. As perimeter insulation Styroboard XPS is dimensionally stable, rot-proof and moisture resistant. It is also a suitable material for use indoors under floors subjected to heavy loads and constant foot traffic, and on variety of roofing applications as well.Styroboard XPS sheets are manufactured from raw material containing a flame retardant additive, and are not a fire hazard when correctly installed. The polystyrene will burn when in contact with a flame, like other organic building materials, but it will self-extinguish when the fire source is removed.

Add insulation from the ground up when building your home

DiamondPodSpacerGraphic

The Foamex Diamond Pod Slab System is a better way of building concrete slabs for new homes, extensions or commercial buildings. The Foamex Diamond Pod Slab lies above the surface, as opposed to traditional foundations, which are dug into the earth. The on ground slab creates air pockets which form an extra insulating layer between the build structure and the ground. The Foamex Diamond Pod Slab System offers long term thermal “R” values with the house foundation being made up of insulating EPS with a layer of concrete over the top. This develops a thermal mass that acts as an insulated bank. The inclusion of EPS pods in a slab adds an insulation benefit of up to R1.0 (W/mK Thermal Resistance) to the slab. While making the house warmer in winter and cooler in summer, this also reduces the overall energy consumption in the house.
