Safety first with Polystyrene

Polystyrene is well known within the building and construction industry thanks to its inherent strength and insulation properties. But did you know that it is also used to help stabilise bridges, tunnels, roads, and rail infrastructure.

Engineers have solved a major safety issue with a disused railway tunnel underneath the approach roads to the Forth Road Bridge in Scotland. After an inspection carried out in February 2016. Engineers discovered that some of the tunnel was degrading in areas, and in need of preventative maintenance.

Using expanded polystyrene (EPS) blocks, the engineers were able to fill the problem areas, reinforcing its structural integrity, as well being easily removed should the tunnel need to be reopened.
