"House of the Year" in Tasmania Built with Foamex EPS
The Housing Industry Association (HIA) 2006 House of the Year for Tasmania was awarded to Kerry Vince Builders for a Foamex EPS rendered design.
The house also won Custom Built Project of the Year and Custom Built Home Over $400,000.
The award-winning home of Anne and Richard Dax is sited on top of Sugarloaf Hill with panoramic views to Frederick Henry Bay, Cremorne and Bruny Island, in Tasmania. Inspired by the brilliant bay view, architect Neil Wade of JAWS Architects created a series of dividing walls that reflect the characteristics of nautical sails. Virtually every wall in the house is curved. The elongated collection of forms stretch along the contour to maximize the view and northern sun exposure.
To achieve the dynamic design, the custom-built walls were constructed using Foamex Polystyrene (EPS), a durable, economical material that is becoming progressively more popular in building construction. It is strong, stable, absorbs shocks, dampens vibrations and is easily rendered for a clean and resilient finish. It also is easy to handle and versatile for creating innovative design. The house retains heat efficiently due to the insulating qualities of the foam along with double-glazed windows and the environmentally friendly design.
Foamex is a specified supplier to Prime Styrene. It is the third time a polystyrene cladding system has been used on homes that have won awards in Tasmania in specific categories through the Master Builders Association and the Housing Industry Association. The home is representing Tasmania in the Australian Housing Industry awards held in Sydney in May 2007.
